ASCII: American Standard Code for Information Interchange

American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII) is the binary code consists of seven information bits and one parity bit for error checking built into most minicomputers and all personal computers to represent in digital format the uppercase and lowercase letters of the Latin script, numerals, and special characters until December 2007, when it was surpassed by UTF-8, which is fully backward compatible to ASCII.
